BANGKOK, 18 August 2009 (NNT) – The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has confirmed that the flood in Kanchanaburi did not result from damage of the Si Nakharind Dam, adding that aid would be quickly given to people who were affected.
EGAT Governor, Sombat Sarntijaree, stated that the EGAT and the provincial authorities had inspected damage in the area while speedily giving assistance to people living near the river. He said initially, it was found that many buildings and water pumps were damaged. He added that people affected from the flood could seek help from the province and the dam.
Mr. Sombat also said that there was no damage found in the dam due to an earthquake as the news had reported. He elaborated that the dam remained strong and was in good condition and that the dam was inspected every two years and therefore was geologically strong despite the surface shift under the dam.
The EGAT Governor then confirmed that the dam break was indeed difficult but residents living near the dam could be confident in their safety. He added that seven warning towers would be built and evacuation exercises would also be conducted.
