BANGKOK, 21 August 2009 (NNT) – His Majesty the King has granted a royal permission for the use of his name for a new variety of Dutch tulip “King Bhumibol” to a Dutch agriculturalist.
Director-General of Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Department of Information Vimon Kidchob said the ministry had been informed by the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary that HM the King had officially granted a request by a Dutchman, Klaas Koedijk who was the owner of the FA.P. Koeddiik & Zn Company in the Netherlands, to name the tulip after him.
The “King Bhumibol” tulip is totally yellow with a height of 45 centimeters. It was developed from the “Prince Claus” tulip named after the consort of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The “Prince Claus” tulip was developed from the Judith Leyster tulip widely recognized as one of the Netherlands’s best tulip varieties.
Koedijk named the new Dutch tulip after the Thai King due to his strong impression of Thai people’s love and loyalty for their beloved King shown during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of HM the King’s accession to the throne in 2006. Mr Koedijk’s son used to live in the Northern region of Thailand as a volunteer teaching computer science in remote areas from 2006 to 2007. He was later married to a Thai woman.
