Bangkok, 6 October 2009 (NNT) – The famous Indo-China border market in the northeastern province of Mukdahan is gearing up to improve its sanitary and safety standards after seeing an increasing number of tourists during the end of Buddhist Lent last weekend.
Mukdahan Governor Boonsong Taechamaneesatit said the market would be developed to become a standardized shopping spot on the Thai-Lao border where vendors sold quality goods at fair prices without taking advantage of tourists. The market would also standardize goods shelving and improve its underground ventilation as well as the parking lot, the governor said.
Meanwhile, vendors selling goods at the Indo-China market have expressed their readiness to comply with the province’s policy which they believe can attract more tourists and benefit the economy of Mukdahan.
President of the Indo-China market merchant group Chairoj Roongchirawat said that the group was more than willing to cooperate with the province because of the current insufficiency in ventilation, disorganized shelving that obstructs footpaths, and other issues. He said the group’s problems would be presented to the market’s board and later to the province.
