15th ASEAN Summit cannot be disrupted

PHETCHABURI, 20 October 2009 (NNT) – Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan assures maximum security for the 15th ASEAN Summit organized in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces late this month.

General Prawit, in his capacity as the director of the Joint Security Operation Center, stated that troops were ready to provide security for the coming 15th ASEAN Summit. He said there was no need to deploy more security officers.

Meanwhile, Acting Police Commissioner-General Police General Pateep Tunprasert expressed the police’s readiness to secure the summit venues, saying that security measures would be implemented according to plans.

As for the announcement of the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship to submit a letter to ASEAN leaders during the summit, the police chief said the group had not informed authorities of the matter.

4,400 police officers from the Provincial Police Region 7, Border Patrol Police Bureau, and Police Special Branch as well as 18,000 troops will be deployed to provide security for the meeting. Other 500 officers have also been prepared in case of emergency.
