BANGKOK, 8 November 2009 (NNT) – The government is preparing to organize a ministerial meeting between Thailand and Vietnam at the beginning of next year to forge a stronger rice market trade, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Speaking in his weekly television program ‘Confidence in Thailand with Prime Minister Abhisit’, the prime minister elaborated his recent mission at the Japan-Mekong Summit held in Japan. He said he had opportunities to discuss many issues with leaders from neighboring countries, including Myanmar, Vietnam and the Lao PDR. Prime Minister Abhisit also had a discussion with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung regarding cooperation in rice trade. Based on the conversation, rice prices in both Thai and Vietnamese markets tend to be favorable, and Thailand has the potential to reach its export target. An official meeting of ministers related to rice trade from both countries will be arranged at the beginning of next year. The prime minister added that he discussed with the Myanmar leader narcotic drug suppression and measures to intercept drug trafficking in the northern border of Thailand.
