Informal debt refinancing applicants tops 125,000

BANGKOK, 12 December 2009 (NNT) – More than 125,000 people have signed up for the government informal debt refinancing program since the registration has been opened for seven days.

Director of the Government Savings Bank (GSB), Lersak Jullatet, said data from over 800 registration counters nationwide showed the combined debt of those participating in the program had reached 13.8 billion THB. Bangkok has the most registered informal debtors, followed by the northeastern provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Khan. Mae Hong Son province in the North sees the least number of registered debtors.

All registration points normally operate from 08.30-16.30 hrs.

The informal debt restructuring scheme was launched by the government to tackle informal debt problems. Registration is available at the GSB and Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives from 1-30 December 2009.
