Thailand and Brunei forge closer ties to develop agriculture and Halal businesses

BANGKOK, 29 March 2010 (NNT) – Thailand and Brunei Darussalam agree to push ahead agricultural ties and the Thai Halal business in Brunei.

Minister of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei, Pehin Dato Haji Yahya, today paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Theera Wongsamut during his official visit to Thailand from 21-26 March 2010.

The two Ministers agreed to start rice cooperation. Mr Pehin stated that his country held a plan to develop its native rice production and hoped for higher productivity. The Minister asked for rice experts to launch a training course in Brunei on pre and post harvest management, latest technologies and other industrial facilities.

The promotion of Thai Halal industry was also discussed at the meeting. Brunei lauded Thailand for successful Halal businesses and would coordinate with the Thai private sector to import Halal food from Thailand particularly those made of chicken. Mr Pehin had invited Thai representatives to the International Halal Food Exhibition in Tehran, Brunei this upcoming June.

Furthermore, Brunei gave green light for the expansion of Thai fruit markets in the country. A team of Thai representatives was once again invited to the Fruit Festival in Brunei to be held in November 2010.
