BoT keeping close watch on impact from Greek crisis

BANGKOK, 8 May 2010 (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand (BoT) affirms Thai financial institutions have not yet been affected by the Greek debt problem but it is keeping a close watch on the impact to the world economy.

BoT Governor Tarisa Watanagase stated that the effect of the European economic crisis on the global economy was still unclear. However, authorities will see whether it would slash investor confidence or not by monitoring Greece’s measure to tackle the problem.

Ms Tarisa believed that Thai financial institutions were immune to the threat as they had only small investments in the affected countries. Exports may experience an indirect impact via the slowing recovery of the world’s economy and it is still too early to estimate the influence on the Thai domestic gross product (GDP).

Meanwhile, the fluctuation of the Thai currency, caused by investors’ and global economic uncertainty, has also been expected.
