NONTHABURI, June 23 (TNA) – The sales value of Thai food exports this year is expected to reach Bt800 billion, an increase of around 4-6 per cent over last year’s total sales, but lower than the previous 10-per cent forecast, said National Food Institute (NFI) executive vice president Amorn Ngammongkolrat.
The reasons contributing to the lower-than-expected export volume are the extended drought in Thailand causing lower agricultural production, higher oil prices, and debt problems in Euro zone countries which can impact world economic expansion.
Dr Amorn said although Thailand has a small market share for its food export to Greece and Spain, following their economic developments is necessary in case their debt problems spread to other European countries.
In addition, as Thai food is popular internationally, the executive vice president said the recent move by China to allow greater flexibility in its exchange-rate system will help increase the competitiveness of Thai food exports if food prices are compared to those of competitors with their exchange rates comparatively to that of Thailand.
Regarding Thailand International Restaurant & Bar 2010 held until Friday, Dr Amorn said about 100 food and drink entrepreneurs are participating to showcase their products. The fair aims at helping promote the related retailers, while also providing them knowledge on finance and technology.
He said that demonstrations on cooking, baking, and making coffee and Thai wine are organised, as well as a competition searching for the best bartender.
According to NFI executive, some 10,000 visitors are expected at the event taking place from 10am-6pm daily at Hall 2, IMPACT Arena Muang Thong Thani. (TNA)
