BANGKOK, 16 December 2010 (NNT) – Thailand has confirmed full support for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to emerge an electricity hub of Asia within 10 years.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) disclosed that Thailand and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have enjoyed their long standing partnership in producing and supplying electricity to each other.
Their relationship began in 1968 when Laos needed electricity from Thailand to build Nam Nguem Dam, which has been generating and supplying power back to Thailand after its construction was completed. Thailand is currently receiving electricity supply from 8 generators in Laos with the production capacity of 2,150 megawatts.
Last week, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva traveled to Laos to attend the opening ceremony of Nam Theun 2 Dam, another cooperation which is expected to render the country a new status of Asia’s battery by the year 2020. Thailand will also be giving all the support needed to achieve the capacity
