BANGKOK, 30 June 2009 (NNT) – The cabinet has endorsed an extension for another 30 days on the study of the NGV bus leasing project.
In a press conference after today’s cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva declared that the cabinet had agreed with a request of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), which sought an extension period for the study of the Transport Ministry’s controversial NGV bus leasing project.
Mr. Abhisit said the NESDB cited that many aspects needed to be scrutinized carefully, for instance details on new bus routes and estimated number of passengers, possible impacts on existing bus operators and whether there is any better alternative in the acquirement of the buses than leasing or purchasing. The Ministry of Transport has reportedly expressed willingness to share all necessary information with the NESDB in the examination process, which will be completed within the next 30 days.
The Prime Minister then assured that the extended period will not cause conflicts between the ruling Democrat Party and its coalition partners, citing that the decision was to ensure the project’s utmost benefits for the public.
