Cabinet endorses use of Internal Security Act at ASEAN meetings in Phuket

BANGKOK, 30 June 2009 (NNT) – The cabinet has approved the imposition of the Internal Security Act in Phuket from 10 to 24 July 2009 to ensure safety for the upcoming ASEAN meetings.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced that the cabinet meeting had endorsed in principle, the enforcement of the Internal Security Act within the entire province of Phuket and a 5 kilometer radius around the island. The resolution came in preparation for 3 important regional gatherings, which include the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC).

With the participation of ASEAN leaders, Mr. Abhisit stated that the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) had been assigned to head up the security operations in the area during 10 to 24 July.
