No human transmission of E coli found in Thailand

BANGKOK, 21 June 2011 (NNT)-Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said in an interview today that no evidence had suggested the possibility of human transmission of E coli O 104 in Thailand, adding that another patient had contracted the disease from ill-prepared food.

He said according to the Department of Disease Control the E coli could be transferred by contact with contaminated food and water; however, human transmission could only occur though sexual intercourse or by blood contact like AIDS.

He added that the Department of Disease Control would convene a follow-up meeting this afternoon while calling for the public not to panic. He also advised people to wash their hands frequently, keep food preparation areas clean, and cook all meats well. The Department will further notify the public of the E coli outbreak if there are any new developments.
