Tesco Lotus, in partnership with Ayutthaya Province, today [Saturday 26th November] hosted a ‘Big Cleaning Day’ at Ayutthaya, which saw [over 1,000] staff and customers joining together to help clean the province’s important historical sites.
Rubbish collection took place in the site’s temples, as well as road clearing, with Tesco Lotus staff giving their time as part of the company’s ‘One Million Hours’ volunteering programme. As part of this initiative, staff have also been volunteering over recent months to pack relief bags and help distribute these to flood victims, with over 700,000 hours being given to date.
Tesco Lotus Chairman, Sunthorn Arunanondcha, who opened the event, said:
“I’m delighted that Tesco Lotus has been able to partner with Ayutthaya Province to help clean up the ancient city after the worst flooding in living memory. I would like to thank our [500] customers who have given their time, as well as all our [500] staff who have volunteered as part of our ‘One Million Hours’ initiative.”
Tesco Lotus’ Senior Corporate Affairs Manager – Public Affair, Charkrit Direkwattanachai said:
“We at Tesco Lotus are more committed than ever to supporting and caring for our communities at this difficult time, with today’s ‘Big Cleaning Day’ being one initiative of many that we’ve undertaken to support flooded communities over recent months”.
Mr Direkwattanachai confirmed that Tesco Lotus has made its own contributed of over 24 million baht worth of essential products to the flood relief effort, helping communities in 40 provinces nationwide. This includes giving away today 2,000 ‘home revival bags’, containing house cleaning products, to affected communities in Ayutthaya.
Alongside this it has set up Tesco Lotus kitchens to distribute food to 6,000 victims and made a donation of 9 rescue boats to the Thai army to help with flood relief efforts, along with 12 floating toilets.
In addition, Tesco Lotus collected dry foods and essential products through its in store product donation campaign, as well as 2 million baht for the Red Cross through in store donation boxes. A number of Tesco Lotus stores have also hosted fundraising concerts headlined by Koh Mr Saxman.
