Financial Rewards for those who can Overcome Challenges: Tim Hornibrook
Hong Kong, Jan 8, 2013 – (ACN Newswire) – Agriculture is an “under-invested space” when it comes to institutional investment, said Tim Hornibrook, Co-head, Macquarie Agricultural Funds Management. Mr Hornibrook will be attending the Asian Financial Forum (AFF) in Hong Kong, 14-15 January, which will feature a panel discussion on food and agriculture.
“It’s a challenge for a number of reasons,” said Mr Hornibrook, in a 13 December interview with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which is organising the AFF along with the Hong Kong SAR Government. “First, it’s actually difficult to allocate capital into, but secondly, from the region’s perspective, it’s a challenge because the region is growing economically, it is growing in terms of population. You’ve got the shift in terms of urbanisation, and all of these things create pressure on the food supply system.”
But for those who persevere, agriculture funds can be a growth industry. Such funds under institutional management are valued at US$35-US$40 billion, according to Mr Hornibrook, who estimates the potential size of the market to be worth up to US$8 trillion.
Speakers of the AFF Panel discussion on Food & Agriculture, 15 January, will include Dr Colin Chartres, former Director General, International Water Management Institute; David Farley, CEO, Australian Agricultural Company; Brett Rierson, China Representative, United Nations World Food Programme; and Ismael Roig, President, Asia-Pacific, Archer Daniels Midland Company.
