Abhisit worries over protection of Khlong Prapa Canal from flood

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has voiced concerns over the safety of Khlong Prapa Canal after the discovery of floodwater flowing into the tap water reservoir.

Commenting on the current flood situation, Mr Abhisit admitted that he was worried about a report that floodwater had entered Chiang Rak and Bang Phlu Canals, which were connected to Bangkok’s main tap water source, Khlong Prapa Canal. Initially, he has requested Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit to look into the matter even though he is confident that the quality of tap water will be constantly tested by the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority.

In the face of criticisms, Mr Abhisit insisted that the Government must prove itself by coming up with effective solutions to the flood problem. As for the coordination between the Government and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on flood prevention, the Democrat leader wished to see no obstacles stemming from their political differences.

Lastly, the Government was urged to be clearer with its public announcements as the current disaster is unlike any previous ones.
