The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is ready to encourage city-dwellers to love reading and will create a reading culture in the Thai society after Bangkok has been designated as World Book Capital 2013.
Speaking in a press conference, Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra stated that Bangkok has been selected as the World Book Capital 2013 by an international committee during their meeting on 27 June 2011.
The panel comprised representatives from the International Publishers Association, the International Booksellers Federation, the International Federation of Library Associations and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The governor added that the BMA has submitted to the committee both operational plans and projects on how it would encourage Bangkok people to read more, the establishment of BMA library, Thai books and reading museum and reading research centre.
MR Sukhumbhand noted that the BMA has cooperated with 89 other related units to forge ahead with the aforementioned projects and other activities.
