Clinton praised Thailand for arms confiscation

BANGKOK, 15 December 2009 (NNT) – US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton lauds Thailand for arresting a Russian aircraft carrying heavy weapons while refueling at the Don Muang Airport.

Ms Hillary also said that Thailand’s procedure, which follows the UN Resolution 1874 (2009) on North Korea, is one successful case on the prohibition of transnational transportation of arms.

Currently, the Thai authorities said that reports on the case to the UN were pending as the weapons were being examined. Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Suthep Thaugsuban said more information on the arrest would be revealed after the investigation was completed.

On Saturday, Thai authorities detained Belarusian and Kazakhstani crew members of the aircraft after they were tipped off by the US about the weapons.
