BANGKOK, 31 March 2010 (NNT) – The government will allocate around 100 million THB for the Department of Foreign Trade in a bid to assist entrepreneurs in the agricultural and industrial sectors affected by climate change.
Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, Wichak Wisetnoi, said the budget was needed in order to compete with Thailand’s important trade partners which imposed new environmental measures to obstruct products from other countries. Such measures include the Carbon Footprint, Emission Trading Scheme and Eco Label.
The budget is expected to be used to implement the “Early Warming” project which will help entrepreneurs to adjust their production and trade in line with measures and regulations of their trade partners.
The ministry has also held seminars called “Eco Lable CSR” to prepare the private sector for such environmental measures.
The director-general added that other developing countries such as South Korea have injected more than one billion USD to tackle climate change with a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2020.
