BANGKOK, 27 August 2009 (NNT) – The Defense Minister expressed assurance that the invocation of the Internal Security Act in Dusit district during 29 August to 1 September would not affect Bangkok residents.
Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan stated that the government’s decision to enforce the Internal Security Act was aimed at allowing security officials to maintain peace and order as well as providing precautionary measures against possible social unrest and violence during the mass demonstration of United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), which was scheduled on 30 August. He said the military and police would work together to ensure security in the area.
The minister added that the Internal Security Operations Command would hold a meeting on 28 August to clearly lay down regulations for the law enforcement while reiterating that the imposition of the Act would not impact the people’s way of life.
