BANGKOK, 9 February 2010 (NNT) – The Government Savings Bank (GSB) has voiced readiness to help solve the informal debt problem as assigned by the Ministry of Finance and manage non-performing loans (NPL) at the same time.
GSB President, Lersuk Chuladesa stated that the Department of Comptroller General had sent a list of informal debtors to the GSB. He said the GSB would take care of about 300,000 informal debtors. According to the president, around 130,000 debtors have less than 50,000 THB of debt while about 200,000 debtors have an obligation of more than 50,000 THB.
Five-hundred thousand people registered in the informal debt refinancing scheme of the government via the GSB while another 500,000 people registered with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.
Mr Lersuk voiced his confidence that the bank would be able to lease and manage loans to aid the debtors without increasing the NPL ratio of the bank which is currently around 7%, worth one billion THB.
