The Ministry of Commerce has announced that more eggs will be distributed to the market very soon while explaining that the current shortage problem is a result of the flood, which has cut off transportation routes.
Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Phuangrach stated that he had requested leading egg suppliers, such as CP, Betagro and Kasemchai Farm, to increase their egg supplies to the market in a bid to help ease the shortage situation incurred by the flood crisis. As a response, CP confirmed that hundreds thousands of eggs would be delivered to the Marketing Organization for Farmers Market tomorrow while Betagro and Kasemchai Farm said they would be able to do as requested early next week.
Meanwhile, Tesco Lotus is in the process of importing over 3 million eggs from Malaysia. Makro is also planning to do the same.
Based on her discussion with the Layer Farmer Association, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) Vatchari Vimooktayon revealed that there were still as many as 25-26 million eggs in the system per day, which were adequate for consumption. However, she clarified that the floods had caused difficulties in the transport of eggs from farms to marketplaces in Bangkok and many other affected provinces.
Moreover, since a number of product distribution centers are located in Ayutthaya province, which has been submerged under floodwater, Ms Vatchari suggested the Government to solve the shortages of products by sending military trucks into the area to bring out the goods. Otherwise, imports of highly-demanded items would be another solution to consider.
