No disruption to IPU Meeting

BANGKOK, 26 March 2010 (NNT) – Leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) have promised to not disrupt the 122nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly scheduled for 27-28 March in Bangkok.

Three UDD core figures, MD Weng Tojirakan, Mr Veera Musikapong and Mr Charaj Dittha-Apichai, reaffirmed today that the anti-government UDD will not derail the coming Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which will be attended by envoys from fifteen nations. The UDD will however dispatch a representative to submit a letter to an official at the summit.

Mr Veera elaborated further that the UDD has resolved to use only peaceful means during its demonstration. He insisted that the UDD is ready for negotiations but only with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, not his appointed negotiators.

The anti-government UDD began their mass demonstration on 14 March and have called for an end to Mr. Abhisit’s government. The group is currently considering a rally at Ratchadamnoen Road on 27 March in place of marching around the capital as originally planned.

The IPU will be attended by Malaysia, Singapore, United States, Belgium, Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, England, Hungary, Iran, Indonesia, Italy, Qatar and the European Union (EU).
