PM proposes national reconciliation road map

BANGKOK, 3 May 2010 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has announced five proposals for national reconciliation road map in a bid to peter out the ongoing political stalemate and the deeply rooted division in the country.

Speaking in a televised address on Monday night, Prime Minister Abhisit admitted that the persisting political standoff originated by many causes and had been accumulating in the Thai society. He stated that the proposed road map had been made form listening to many sides as follows.

First, the government and all sides must together enhance greater unity of the Thai people in their loyalty for Their Majesties the King and Queen and protect the monarchy from being involved in the current political standoff as attempted by some groups of people.

Second, the government will try to improve welfare systematically in terms of profession, income, and life security for the people as protestors feel that they have been treated unfairly. All sides of the society will help participate in this process with clear and evaluative targets.

Third, the government will reform the media to have more freedom but without creating division in the country because the media has been utilized for political motives while state-owned media has been criticized for being used to incite division in the country themselves.

Fourth, the government will set up independent committees to investigate all related incidents from recent demonstrations, including the 10 April bloodshed, the grenade attacks at Sala Daeng Intersection, the recent clash at Don Mueang, and others to present truth to the public.

Fifth, the government will give justice to all sides in solving political problems because the sense of injustice has been strong among many groups of politicians for the past four to five years; therefore, related laws, including the Constitution, would be reviewed and considered.

Prime Minister Abhisit however stressed that the presented road map could not be successful without cooperation from all sides, and he believed that it would not take long to do so. He ended that the government is ready to hold a fresh election on 14 November 2010 as planned if the country is peaceful.
