BANGKOK, 5 January 2010 (NNT) – The Ministry of Science and Technology has appointed a working group to find out the most appropriate technology for Thailand to develop as measures to counter climate change.
Researcher of the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI), Dr Surachai Sathitkunarat, said findings from the working group will be presented at the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Mexico. He stated that although many countries considered the latest UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 5th Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Copenhagen a failure, he recognized some progress.
He cited, as an example, progress in the transfer of technology to reduce greenhouse gas and the adaptation to climate change impacts. The meeting proposed the appointment of a Technology Executive Committee to manage the greenhouse gases reduction know-how and to systemize the knowledge flow amongst member countries. Another initiative was the planned establishment of the Climate Technology Network which will become a coordination center run by experts from around the world, Dr Surachai said.
He further elaborated that for Thailand, the Ministry of Science and Technology in cooperation with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the STI, has appointed a joint working group for counter-climate-change technology research. The study includes technological demand for the process, potential development in wind and biomass energy. Results of the study should be concluded before the next conference in Mexico in 2010.
