Songkran travelers in Chiang Mai unnerved by political tension

ANGKOK, 21 April 2010 (NNT) – The number of tourists in Chiang Mai during Songkran holidays was unaffected by the political tension, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Chiang Mai Office.

A TAT Chiang Mai official, Ms Punyaporn Pradabsuk, stated that the political rally had only a slight impact on tourists’ sentiment. She said although most of the visitors were concerned, they still continued on their trip. Meanwhile, local people who live in rally areas decided to travel to other districts during the holidays.

The TAT estimated that the income circulated in Chiang Mai during the holidays was approximately 150 million THB on daily average. Photos capturing the atmosphere during the festive season will also be posted on the TAT’s Facebook page to promote tourism among teenagers and working people.

The TAT will continue to launch promotional campaigns, hoping to attract more foreign and Thai tourists to Chiang Mai and other northern provinces during the green season, which starts in May.

Upcoming major events to be held in Chiang Mai include a world bicycle competition in September, in which over 2,500 cyclists worldwide are expected to participate.
