Thai and Cambodian troops agree on truce

SI SA KET, 5 February 2011 (NNT) – Military officials of Thailand and Cambodia have ordered a ceasefire upon a four-point agreement as border tensions are waning.

Following truce talks between Thailand’s Second Army Region Commander Lieutenant General Tawatchai Samutsakorn and Cambodia’s Fourth Military Region Commander Lieutenant General Chea Mon, Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd announced that the negotiation result was satisfactory.

The two sides made a pact to halt firing, refrain from sending reinforcements, prevent further accidents and misunderstanding, and work more closely with the coordination units at Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara.

The intensity around the disputed border area has reportedly died down while the Thai Army has ordered reopening of border checkpoints closed earlier.

Col Sansern said, on Thailand’s part, all activities of the border patrol soldiers would be overseen carefully in order to strictly abide by the four-point agreement. He also gave his word that Thailand did not attack Cambodia first, nor would it ever do so.
