Vehicles produced by Thailand are widely accepted in the global market as the country so far has been exporting 5.5 million units for 13 years and five months.
According to Thailand Automotive Institute Director Wanlop Tiasiri, vehicles produced by Thailand are getting more popular with the total 5.5 million units exported worth over 2.5 trillion baht since the 1997 economic crisis. The value was doubled to 5 trillion baht when combined with incomes from exports of auto parts for repairs and assembly.
Last year Thailand exported 900,000 cars, the highest number so far. The exports this year are expected to slip slightly due to the limited supplies of auto parts from Japan after it was partially devastated by the 11 March earthquake and tsunami.
The institute expected that the auto production in the latter half of this year will increase and make up with the first half due to rising supplies of auto parts from Japan. This year’s exports should remain in the same volume as last year, or around 900,000 units, lower than the estimate of one million.
Thailand has been one of the world’s leading automotive production bases with its efficiency to produce vehicles according to customers’ specifications. Major automotive export markets are in Asia, including ASEAN, the Middle East and Japan.
